Chapter Eleven
Travis
Travis's plan to dick-mo-tize Moon into reconsidering her plan to jet off to Iceland had hit a snag when Camille dragged Moon out of the clinic. Although, Moon had only been in Chicago for a couple of days, he seriously considered cooking up reasons to venture into the city to find her. He missed her, and they only had so much time left together. He hadn't been up to Chicago for yearsânot since collegeâand he'd always found big cities overwhelming. Nevertheless, he planned to drive up there sometime that week to take care of some personal business that no one knew about. Not Moon. Not even his mother. His paperwork was in order, as far as he could tell, and was even now hanging out in the glove box of his old, beat-up truck. He even had a bag packed and secured in the lockbox in the bed of the truck.
The previous night, as he lay in bed trying to get to sleep alone, he'd gone searching for information about Iceland and its capital city, ReykjavÃk. He was surprised to discover the city, while bigger than Center City, was about the size of Bloomington-Normal, another college town in Illinois. Also, it was roughly the size of Springfield, the capital of Illinois, and a place he had visited many times.
He'd read that Iceland was known for its geothermal features, including the Blue Lagoon, which was pleasantly warm year-round. There were volcanoes, glaciers, hot springs, caves, and breathtaking landscapes to explore. The city of ReykjavÃk was a bit of a party town, with fanciful architecture, a thriving art scene, restaurants, and street food vendors, and of course, the northern lights. Moon would have a great time in Iceland, he mused. She might even forget all about him.
While she was in Chicago, Travis kept in touch with Moon via text messages. She and Camille were staying at Camille's mother's condo in the city while Camille sorted through her belongings in preparation for moving to Center City next year at the beginning of summer.
He sat in his office Tuesday morning, thinking of the optimal text message to send her. He wanted her to know he was thinking of her, he missed her, he couldn't wait to see her, but that he wasn't desperate for her. Not that he wasn't desperate to see her. He just didn't want to seem desperate.
Travis: Hey.
The response was close to immediate.
Moon: Hey! Sup?
Moon did not have an iPhone, so when she replied to his texts, they always popped up seemingly out of nowhere, surprising him. There was no sense of suspense or anticipation engendered by the bouncing gray dots. If he could get her to stay with him in Center City, he would buy her an iPhone. He did not like this dotless communication between them.
Travis: Things slow down for us at the end of the year. It's quiet.
Moon: No Corinne?
Travis smiled to himself.
Travis: No, not today. I think she's busy doing some church thing.
Moon: Ah....I should tell you what she and I talked about.
